Fall Out Boy made their third stop of their Save Rock and Roll...

Fall Out Boy made their third stop of their Save Rock and Roll Tour in Columbus, Ohio on May 17. The show was the third of 33 sold out shows for the band; the entire U.S. leg of the Save Rock and Roll Tour is sold out.

Over 5,000 people were at LC Pavilion, about 400 of which were in the pit for the show.

The band has three rotating openers for them on the tour. Hollywood Holt was the opener on the Columbus leg of the tour.

Hollywood Holt is a rapper from Fall Out Boy’s native Chicago and he, along with a DJ, got the fans riled up for the band that they have been waiting for since 2009.

As soon as Hollywood Holt started singing, the fans in the pit pushed forward, causing a mad surge of people to the front. Hollywood Holt had to stop during his second song to ask people not to push; people did not listen though and were pushing the entire night.

Hollywood Holt got the audience involved with his set. He gave backgrounds on his songs and even asked the girls that knew how to “twerk” to go ahead and “twerk” during one of his songs.

After about six songs though, Hollywood Holt was done and the crowd got crazier.

The moment Fall Out Boy entered the stage at 9 p.m. sharp, the band jumped into “Thriller” sans the recording of Jay-Z rapping.

The crowd screamed and started the pushing and crowdsurfing, which lasted all night.

After one of the songs, Patrick Stump asked the people in the pit to take a couple of steps back. The people in the front rows could barely move because of the pushing and shoving and the band just wanted to make sure that their fans were okay before continuing to power through the set.

Pete Wentz took time out after “Hum Hallelujah” to thank the fans in Ohio. Since the band is from Chicago, they appreciate all of their Midwest fans more than anything and they dedicated “Grand Theft Autumn/Where is Your Boy” to the Midwestern fans.

Stump even forgot the lyrics to “Save Rock and Roll.” Since the live version of the song is sans Elton John, Stump accidentally started singing Elton John’s part, causing The band ended the night with their signature, “Saturday,” promising fans that they will be back around soon.

With this tour Fall Out Boy is proving to their old and new fans that they are not ready to quit the music industry by any chance.

CONCERT REVIEW-The Airborne Toxic Event

The Airborne Toxic Event made their way back to Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio, which is their, “favorite venue in Ohio,” according to lead singer Mikel Jollett.

LEAGUES opened for The Airborne Toxic Event and the crowd stayed attentive throughout the entire set. The band played ten songs in their set and got the audience excited for The Airborne Toxic Event, who were set to hit the stage at 9 p.m

LEAGUES kept the audience moving and showed the crowd that there was about to be a killer band onstage at Columbus.

Before The Airborne Toxic Event even came on stage though, an inflatable eagle graced the middle back of the stage. Then the band made their way out where they started the set with “Gasoline.”

The band left little time to talk during their 18 song set. When they did talk, though, Jollett reminded fans how much they loved them and how much the band loves coming to Ohio to perform. Jollett even said that the crowd at Columbus was the largest crowd that they ever had.

The band played four songs from their newest album, “Such Hot Blood,” which was released on April 30. One of the new songs, “Elizabeth,” was the final song of the set.

The Airborne Toxic Event proved in Columbus that they deserve to have their own headlining tours. The entire show was filled with life and the band made sure that there was never a dull moment.

Even though the Columbus stop was the last day on the Such Hot Blood tour, The Airborne Toxic Event proved that they will come back as a headliner in the future.

Band of the Week: Goodnight Annabelle

Our band of the week this week is from Provo, Utah, and originally from their namesake, Annabella, Utah. I happened to catch them live a few months ago and I was really impressed. I think you will be too once you check them out. I got to talk to them a little bit about their upcoming album and what they’ve got in store for this year.

I’ll start with the question that is usually the hardest to answer: How would you describe your sound, or what genre of music do you consider yourself?

Alt-rock-pop is how we sometimes describe our sound. That might sound like a contradiction to some people, but its tough to really pin down our sound to fit one specific category. Our older stuff is a little on the heavier side, some of our new music is a little dancy, other songs are closer to alternative rock, and then some are mix of all the above! Put it all together and you get Goodnight Annabelle.

You’re heading into the studio soon to work on your 4th album. Will this be another EP or a full length? How will it compare to what you have done in the past?

We love recording music! And we haven’t recorded anything since the additions of Jeff (bass) and Jason (keys), so we’re excited to jump back into the studio and lay down our newest songs. We’re asking ourselves the same question about whether to record another EP, or make this a full length album. We’ve got enough new material for a full length, so we’re leaning that direction.

Can you tell us a little bit about your songwriting process? Does one of you do most of the songwriting or is it a collaborative effort?

Almost every band member is a songwriter, which helps give our songs variety. Sometimes one band member will come to practice with an idea, and we’ll use that as a starting point. Other times we all just jam together and see what direction that takes us. But for the most part, everyone collaborates in Goodnight Annabelle’s songwriting.

You’ve been working on some lyric videos with photos from fans. Do you have any plans for any full production music videos, or is this something you’d be interested in doing in the future?

We wanted to re-release Stay from our last album, and the fan photo lyric video seemed like a fun idea. We’re also planning to release a full production music video with a single from our new album sometime later this year.

A few months ago you played a show opening for Mayday Parade. How did you get that gig? What was the experience like? Have you played with any other bands that are that popular before?

Playing with Mayday was an awesome experience! They put on a great show, and we learned a lot. Prior to that, we’d gone through a tough time losing our long-time drummer and looking for a replacement. But when we were contacted by a venue in southern Utah looking for someone to open for Mayday, we jumped on it. This was the first nationally touring band we’ve opened for, and it was just what we needed to motivate us to step up our game and work on releasing our best album so far.

Do you have any touring plans for the summer?

No plans to tour this summer since we’ll be focused on recording, but we’ll plan an album release show for the end of the summer.

What bands would you consider your greatest musical influences?

We have such a diverse band, so our influences aren’t really limited to specific bands or genres. We take inspiration from a pretty wide range of 90s and 00s bands like Jimmy Eat World, Muse, Blink 182, Linkin Park, Mae, Third Eye Blind, Reliant K, to name a few. Some of us also take some inspiration from heavier stuff like Tool, Breaking Benjamin, and Finch. Throw in the mix that Jason (keys) can play anything from classical piano to ragtime, and our lead vocalist (Sam) draws a lot of inspiration from pop artists like Maroon 5 … the result is pretty interesting.

What are you doing when you’re not playing music? Are you in school, have other jobs, etc?

We’re all musicians at heart, and our dream is to make music for a living. But we’re also all married and a few of us have kids. So outside of the band, we’re all working full time jobs. Within the band we’ve got two web designers, two engineers, and a behavioral science major.

If you could tour or collaborate with any other band, who would it be and why?

Wow, that’s a tough question. Every band member would have a different answer for this … Possibly Imagine Dragons. They got their start in Utah playing the same local venues we’ve played, so learning from and collaborating with them would be incredible.

What are you most looking forward to about this summer?

We’ve mentioned it a few times already, but we’re stoked about the new songs we’ve got in the pipeline and can’t wait to share them with our fans this summer. Its just good fun music!

Photographer of the Week: Alex Brown

What’s in your bag/what gear do you own? What would you like to purchase next?

I shoot with a Nikon D90 and my lenses are an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, 55-200mm f/4-5.6, and a 35mm f/1.8. I absolutely love my 35mm. That is the lens you will always find on my camera. I have my eye on the 50mm f/1.4 right now. I love portraiture and I know that’s my next lens to purchase. I also have a 43” 5 in 1 reflector that is great for bouncing light or softening it.

How long have you been involved with photography? What inspired you to do concert photography?

I first found interest in photography when I went to Australia in 2006. I took a little disposable camera with me and loved the look of the film when I had it developed. About six months after that I went to a Red Jumpsuit Apparatus concert in Gainesville, FL and took along my crappy little point and shoot. I shot for fun from the front row and realized maybe I have something here. Looking back on the images I think they are horrible but that is where I realized my passion for music photography. I’ve been shooting all together for six or seven years now.

Who was the first band/artist you shot?

The first show/band that I photographed was The Rock Band Live Tour at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in 2008. The lineup was The Cab, Dashboard Confessional and Panic! At the Disco. I was and still am a huge fan of Panic! At the Disco so that was just a dream come true for me. That was my first huge show.

If you could give any advice to newer concert photographers what would you tell them?

My advice would be to be prepared. Make sure you have more than one memory card, a fully charged battery and possibly two, and plastic bag or cover incase you’re outside and it starts raining. Also, remember pit etiquette. Don’t shove other photographers out of your way and don’t block shots. Remember that everyone is in there to do their job so get the shot you want/need but also be respectful. The last important piece of advice is to have fun!

What did your first time in the pit feel like?

My first time in the pit was something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I remember waiting for our sign to take our places in the pit when the venue was overcome by darkness as the drums started rumbling. I could even feel it in my chest. We sprinted to the pit and out came The Cab. The lights were so bright and colorful, matching my energy and adrenaline. I remember when Panic! At the Disco came out I was able to say a few words to Brendon Urie in between songs. I loved my first time in the pit. You could say it sparked my addiction for concert photography.

What is your dream band/artist to shoot and/or tour with?

One band that I have had my sights set on for years is Paramore. I absolutely love their stage presence and energy. They just kill it up there! Hayley just has this epic glow about her. I will photograph them some day. I just know it.

Do you edit your photos? If so, what software do you use and how much time and effort do you put into your editing?

I do edit my photos. I use Lightroom 4 to edit my work and I love it. It is so easy to use Lightroom. It depends on the photograph but I put a lot of work into editing my images. I don’t change the image; I just fix little dust particles, and distractions. I basically stare at my photo for an hour because I have to make sure it’s exactly how I want to present it. When I shoot, I shoot the photo with everything in mind. I don’t like having to clone anything out or fix major errors. When I shoot I want to get it right in the camera.

Do you think you have a particular quality about your photography that sets you apart from other photographers?

I think I do have a certain quality or characteristic that sets me apart from everyone else. When I shoot, I feel like I connect with the artist and I feel like I get those “decisive moment” shots. I want to make my viewers feel like they were really there in the front row rocking out. I love really showcasing how great a band’s set was. I want people and the artists to love my work.

How do you feel your photography has changed since you first began? Do you expect it to change in the future?

I feel my photography and style has changed tremendously over the years and since I have began shooting. I didn’t know much when I first started and now I have learned such a vast variety of techniques and little tricks that have helped me grow. I have also grown in my confidence. I know that if there is something I want to do or accomplish, if I set my heart and mind on it, I will achieve it.
